Phone

Calling from France with a foreign mobile may get very costly in a short period of time! My advise, run to a "Tabac" shop, where they do sell cigarettes (by the way the only places where you can buy cigarettes in France). Ask the tender for a Bic Phone. Yes Bic, like the little lighters brand, the very same one.

For 50€ you'll have a phone, ready to work, with 60 minutes of calling and SMS prepaid!

Transports

Pretty easy to go from a place to another here in Paris.

Use Metro, the local subway, should bring you anywhere at less than 5 min by walk of the spot you run after ;). You can buy several kind of passes but avoid single trip tickets, tempt to be costly (1,5€/each). More information on www.ratp.fr where you can also figure out your trips and metro line changes.

Little maps are available for free at Metro offices, ask for them! Also, there is usually a local district map out of each metro station. Be careful, Metro closes at 1am (week days) and 2am (week ends).

Buses are cool, they are much slower than Metro but you can see what's up outside! They work with the same tickets/passes than the Metro. Some lines are working all night long...not the safest idea...

Velibs are bikes that you can rent for a day. They don't cost much (2/3€per day) and are confortable. Watch out before you pick one, some might be broken...

Finally taxi cabs. They aren't expensive in Paris, avoid rush hours like 5 to 7pm or 8 to 9am when you may get stucked on traficjam.

Food and beverages

It’s easy to sit down and have a nice fresh beer in Paris. Still, some bars and restaurants are way over priced, they’ll make you pay between 7 to 15 for a pint of beer!

Here are some good ones, some of the most welcoming and cheap place of Paris!

  • Le troquet: 36 rue Clignancourt Paris 18 (18th arrondissement) Metro Station: Chateau Rouge on line 4 -
Happy hours from 6 pm to 2am: 3,00€/Pint

  • Au Clair de Lune: 1 rue Ramey, Paris 18 (18th Arrondissement) Metro Station: Chateau Rouge on line 4-
Happy hour from 6pm to 2am: 3,5€/Pint, awesome music and Dj lineups

  • Le Louis d'or: 3 rue de la Bourse, Paris 3 (3rd arrondissement) Metro station: Bourse on line 3 -

Excellent spirit in this Bar where "Xala" the Basque guy will be happy to welcome you and poor you a nice pint of "Oldarki", a typical beer from it's southern french region

  • Chez Francis Labutte: 122, Rue Caulaincourt, Paris 18, Metro station: Lamarck Caulaincourt on line 12
I love this spot where you can eat actual great french food, cooked fresh and extremelly afordable. Try the Tartare or one of the daily french pie "tarte" for 6,20€!!! At lunch time it may be a bit crowded. Take a few minutes to walk around the restaurant, the place is gorgeous and really awesome to take pictures, very typical indeed
